I Need to Cut Energy Costs. Where Do I Start?
It’s not easy being green. In recent years, however, energy efficiency has become equally important to consumers and Fortune 500 leaders. Home Depot and Marriott International are among the many corporations that have set remarkable energy reduction goals.
Whether you’ve been handed a corporate master plan or decided independently to cut energy costs, it’s tough to find the right place to start – particularly when you’re working for a brand with a multi-state presence. WB has 3 questions to help identify the locations that can deliver the greatest “bang for your buck”:
In what states do you pay the most per kWh?
In the United States, Hawaii has the most expensive electricity at roughly 34 cents/kWh for commercial customers. Don’t have locations in the Aloha State? Then New York, California, and New England are likely to have your highest electricity costs. Use the U.S. Energy Information Administration data tool to shrink a national portfolio of locations down to buildings in a more manageable number of states: http://www.eia.gov/electricity/data/browser/
What specific locations use the most kWh?
It’s time to look through your lighting data. Do you have locations with extended hours (and therefore greater energy usage) or buildings that haven’t received lighting upgrades in several years?
Where are the most compelling rebates available?
To deliver an attractive ROI, energy-saving upgrades should pay for themselves – ideally through a combination of reduced energy usage and rebates or incentives. Explore the thousands of available rebates using the U.S. Department of Energy-funded DSIRE database: http://www.dsireusa.org/.
